KOTLI (Kashmir English): The protest demanding justice in the Tasmia Sohail murder case turned violent in Khuiratta, Kotli district, leaving police officials, including the SHO, injured.

The family members of the victim and locals protested against the performance of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) formed to investigate the murder of a 6-year-old girl.

According to police, an accused named Mumtaz Shah was arrested from Faisalabad on August 3, four days after a report emerged about the disappearance of Tasmia from Saidpur Pilan in Khuiratta.

The young girl’s body was discovered in the fields, and an accused was arrested and later confessed to the crime.

The protesters pelted stones at the police station, injuring five officials, including the Station House Officer (SHO).

Family members and locals have been staging a sit-in at Rally Chowk for three days, demanding action against the accused and objecting to the JIT’s investigation process.

Earlier this month, Azad Kashmir Police decided to form a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to probe the case after the victim’s heirs expressed distrust in the police investigation.

The police spokesperson confirmed that the DIG Office Mirpur has issued a letter to high authorities, requesting the formation of JIT after the victim’s father, Muhammad Sohail, expressed constant distress over the investigation in the case.

The spokesperson said that an investigation team was formed at the district level to investigate the case, on which the heirs of the deceased expressed distrust.  “Later, the Central Police Office Muzaffarabad formed an investigation team consisting of senior officers, on which the deceased’s father also expressed distrust.”

“Due to the demand of the victim’s father, Sohail, the higher authorities have been urged to form a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to investigate the case,” the statement added.
