The off-pitch tensions between Pakistan and India at the 2025 Asia Cup refuse to die down, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) having allegedly filed a proper complaint with the International Cricket Council (ICC) against provocative actions by Haris Rauf and Sahibzada Farhan during their Super Fours match.
While the two teams have already crossed swords twice in the tournament, the feud has spread beyond the field. The latest controversy comes after the PCB had complained to the ICC about Suryakumar Yadav’s comments and India not shaking hands with the Pakistan team following both games.
The BCCI is aggrieved over the second meeting, when Sahibzada Farhan and Haris Rauf were not only noticed for their performance on the field but also for their behavior post-play.
Farhan’s half-century celebration, where he simulated shooting with his bat using it as an imaginary gun, was considered provocative.
Rauf was also noticed making “downed jet” gestures at spectators close to the boundary. Both these incidents have since turned viral on social media, adding more heat to the debate.
Reports say the BCCI lodged its complaint through an email on Monday. If the Pakistani players decide to dispute the charges in writing, a full hearing conducted by match referee Richie Richardson will follow.
Regardless of the outcome of BCCI’s complaint against Haris Rauf and Sahibzada Farhan, the goodwill between the two cricketing giants appears to have all but vanished.
The 2025 Asia Cup carries added emotional weight, marking their first encounter since an armed conflict earlier this year. While many anticipated a chilly atmosphere, few could have predicted the extent to which political tensions would seep into the sport.
With another possible showdown on the horizon, however, it appears the drama is hardly finished, and the Asia Cup could yet see another installment of this tension-filled rivalry.
