KOHAT (Kashmir English): Pakistan’s military has claimed that its air defence systems intercepted and brought down eight drones allegedly launched from Afghanistan on Wednesday morning.
According to the information provided by the military, four drones were brought down in the mountainous areas on the outskirts of Kohat, while the remaining four were intercepted in the heights near Torkham.
The military said the drones were detected and neutralised by Pakistan’s air defence systems before they could reach their intended targets. It further claimed that the attempted attacks were aimed at civilian areas.
Pakistan has accused the Afghan Taliban authorities of supporting militant groups operating from Afghan territory, describing the reported drone launches as another indication of such support. These are allegations by Pakistan; Afghan authorities have previously rejected similar accusations.
The reported incident comes amid heightened tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Pakistan’s military had previously reported intercepting four rudimentary drones launched from Afghanistan into Balochistan in June.
According to the statement provided, the latest incident followed overnight firing from Afghan positions in the Kurram sector, during which Pakistan’s armed forces reportedly targeted and destroyed multiple posts in response.
The military reiterated that Pakistan’s armed forces remain on high alert and prepared to respond to cross-border threats and protect the country’s territorial sovereignty.
