LOS ANGELES (Kashmir English): Spain became the latest team, the 11th, to reach the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after defeating Austria 3:0 on Thursday.
The Spain vs Austria game was played at Los Angeles Stadium (SoFi Stadium) located in Inglewood, California.
The winners will face either Portugal or Croatia at Dallas Stadium on Monday, July 6, 2026, for their FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match.
So far, 11 nations have officially qualified for the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The confirmed teams are Canada, Brazil, Paraguay, Morocco, Norway, France, Mexico, England, Belgium, USA, and Spain.
The remaining spots will be decided as the Round of 32 concludes over the next few days.
Spain vs. Austria match at FIFA World Cup
In the 29th minute, Marc Cucurella smashed the ball home from a corner, but the referee ruled it out for a controversial foul on Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager.
Spain was 1:0 in the 36th minute as Pedri slipped a pass to Cucurella, who provided a low cross that Mikel Oyarzabal calmly swept into the net.
In the 66th minute, after a lengthy spell of Spanish possession, Baena stood up an excellent cross to the back post where Pedro Porro arrived late to slam a downward header home.
Towards the end of the match time, Mikel Oyarzabal capped off his sensational performance by slotting home his second goal of the match to seal the dominant victory.
During the match, Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simón set a new national record for the longest consecutive stretch without conceding a goal at a World Cup.
He eclipsed Iker Casillas’ previous record of 476 minutes, as Spain kept their fourth consecutive clean sheet of the 2026 tournament.
