Water storage in country’s major reservoirs drop to 391,000 acre feet

ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The water storage in the country’s three major water reservoirs — Tarbela, Mangla, and Chashma — has dropped to 391,000 acre feet.

According to Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) sources, the water storage is 491,000 acre feet less than last year. On April 7 last year, the water storage in Tarbela, Mangla, and Chashma was 888,000 acre-feet.

On April 7, Tarbela Dam had a water storage of 265,000 acre-feet last year, and it has fallen to 81,000 acre-feet.

Furthermore, it was learned that the water storage in the Mangla Dam was 412,000 acre-feet last year, which has now reduced to 248,000 acre-feet, while on April 7 last year, the water storage in the Chashma Barrage was 211,000 acre-feet, which was recorded at 72,000 acre-feet today.

According to WAPDA sources, the water inflow into the Indus River at Tarbela is 18,600 cusecs, while on April 7 last year, the water inflow was 19,200 cusecs.

Moreover, WAPDA officials said that the water inflow in the Jhelum River at Mangla is 21,800 cusecs, while last year the water inflow was 33,200 cusecs.

The water inflow in the Indus River at Chashma Barrage is 32,200 cusecs, and on April 7 last year, the water inflow was 51,700 cusecs.

The development came days after the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a drought alert in the country.
