ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has reported severe rainfall in Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Tuesday, due to which all educational institutions in the twin cities have been closed as the water levels are rising dangerously in many places.
PMD stated that rainfall began at 3:20 AM on Monday and lasted till 8:00 AM on Tuesday. Rawalpindi’s Deputy Commissioner Nadeem Nasir gave orders to all departments to be on high alert. He also advised people in the vicinity of Nullah Lai to take precautionary measures and, if necessary, to evacuate to safer places.
According to the district administration, teams have been directed to be on standby for emergencies, and a team of rescue 1122 has been deployed in the vicinity of Nullah Lai.
As per the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), a rain emergency was announced in the catchment area of Nullah Lai due to the severe rains.
According to PMD, WASA recorded a discharge of 29 ft at Katarian and a water level of 24 ft at the Gowalmandi Bridge.
Heavy rains hit Rawalpindi as Shamsabad received 197 mm of rain, New Katarian received 185 mm, and Golra received 157 mm.
Traffic Jammed across Rawalpindi and Islamabad
The heavy rain in Islamabad and Rawalpindi has affected the traffic too; all roads across the cities have been submerged under water, making it difficult for commuters to carry on their daily life activities.
According to the details, traffic was severely affected on Rawalpindi Murree Road, Waris Khan. Posh sectors of Islamabad like E-11, Bahria, DHA have also been affected severely.
Flood Alert Issued
Authorities have issued a flood alert for the twin cities as water levels have risen to an alarming level. According to Rawalpindi’s Deputy Commissioner Nadeem Nasir, orders have been issued to all departments to be on high alert. He also advised people in the vicinity of Nullah Lai to take precautionary measures and, if necessary, to evacuate to safer places.
