In a post on X, Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat announced that “due to the prolonged winter spell & extremely low temperature next week, the government has decided to extend winter vacations till January 19.”

He said that the government acted on the advice of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).

According to the earlier notification, the schools and colleges were scheduled to reopen on January 12. The government had announced winter vacations across the province from December 22 to January 10.

In a statement to the media, the minister said that the decision was also made based on a public survey on the Education Minister Sikandar Hayat’s social media page. “In the public survey, about 87 per cent of people voted in favor of extending the holidays, while about 13 per cent of people voted in favor of January 12.”

“After consultation with the public, educational institutions will now open from January 19. The decision was made keeping in mind the severity of the weather and the health of the students,” Hayat said.
