ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that below-normal rainfall across several regions in early January could cause a sharp reduction in soil moisture, posing risk to Rabi crops.

According to the three-month climate outlook by the PMD, crops in rain-fed agricultural zones, particularly in Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa may experience increased stress due to the prolonged dry spell.

The department also warned that higher-than-normal temperatures could increase the risk of pest attacks, further challenging farmers.

The PMD, however, expects that weather conditions will improve by late January and during February, with better rainfall likely.

Rain to help reduce smog

The likely wet spell will help reduce smog and fog while boosting water reserves and restoring soil moisture.

The PMD has urged farmers to plan timely interventions to minimise potential crop losses in vulnerable areas.
