PM Shehbaz vows Pakistan will continue role in easing tensions in Middle East

ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasised that Pakistan would continue to play its role as an honest and sincere mediator and facilitator to restore peace in the Middle East amid the escalating tensions between the US and Iran.

He made these remarks during a meeting with Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni at the Prime Minister’s Office earlier today, the PMO’s media wing said.

Momeni, accompanied by a high-level delegation, arrived in Islamabad on an official visit on Monday night and was received by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.

During the meeting, the premier welcomed the Iranian Interior Minister and his delegation to Pakistan.

While recalling his visit to Tehran earlier this month to attend the funeral ceremony of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, the PM conveyed his “respectful regards and good wishes for Supreme Leader Sayyid Mojtaba Khamenei and President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian.”

Moreover, the premier shared his “deep concern over the recent escalation in the Gulf region” and urged all sides to “exercise restraint and refrain from actions” that could further destabilize the region.

“While emphasizing that Pakistan would continue to play its role as an honest and sincere mediator and facilitator, the Prime Minister reiterated Pakistan’s strong commitment to regional peace and stability,” the press release stated.

 

Interior Minister Momeni thanked the Prime Minister for the warm welcome accorded to him and his delegation in Islamabad.

He conveyed greetings and best wishes of the Iranian leadership, stating that he was leading a delegation of senior government officials to enhance bilateral ties.

In addition, the Iranian Minister expressed deep appreciation for the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Field Marshal Asim Munir for their untiring mediation efforts that led to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.

He also expressed gratitude for the Prime Minister’s visit to Tehran to attend the funeral ceremony of late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sen. Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Minister for Interior Mohsin Naqvi, Minister for Information Attaullah Tarar, Advisor to the Prime Minister Dr. Syed Tauqir Shah, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry and other senior government officials were also present.

Momeni visits Police Lines, Pakistan Monument

Before he met with PM Shehbaz, Interior Minister Momeni, along with Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, visited the Police Lines in Islamabad today, the Interior Ministry said on X.

Upon arrival, the Iranian Interior Minister was warmly welcomed at the parade ground, where a special contingent of the Islamabad Police presented a guard of honour.

In his remarks, Eskandar Momeni appreciated the professionalism of the Islamabad Police personnel. He also distributed prizes among the police personnel for their excellent performance.

Inspector General Islamabad Police Ali Nasir Rizvi and other senior police officers were also present on the occasion.

Momeni also visited the Pakistan Monument in Islamabad, where the Federal Constabulary contingent presented a guard of honour to the visiting dignitary.

Eskandar Momeni laid a floral wreath at the Martyrs’ Monument and offered Fateha for the departed souls. He paid rich tribute to the martyrs for their supreme sacrifices.
