ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has released a cold wave alert, notifying the inhabitants of the province about a drastic drop in temperatures between January 10 and 16.
Besides the heavy snowfall that may occur in Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiat, and Pothohar areas, the authorities have also mentioned that fog and smog conditions are likely to become worse.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has called upon people to take the necessary measures against the difficult weather conditions. The educational institutions, including universities and colleges, have been asked to inform students to wear warm clothes and also to take steps so that no one gets cold in the classrooms.
Hospitals, especially basic health units, have been told to keep sufficient medical supplies and personnel to cater to any emergencies. DG PDMA Irfan Kathia has asked the people to limit their outdoor activities, not to travel unless necessary, and to observe safety measures when on the road.
Tourists going to Murree and the nearby areas are asked to follow the PDMA directions closely,, use fog lights and drive carefully, and refrain from speeding or braking suddenly on icy roads.
The PDMA has deployed tourist assistance centers in Murree and is constantly keeping a watch on the weather through its control room. In case of emergency, residents can reach out to the PDMA helpline at 1129.
Authorities point out that public cooperation is very important during this cold snap. They urge the public to keep themselves updated with the latest information, wear good clothing, and take all kinds of safety measures to protect their health.
