ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): As part of the government efforts to improve internet services in the country, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is going to auction 5G spectrum on March 10.

Chairman PTA Hafeezur Rehman said that the public desires improved internet services and that without better connectivity, the vision of a digital Pakistan remains incomplete.

He hoped that the internet issues will be resolved following the 5G auction.

Director-General (Wireless-Licensing) at the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, Amer Shahzad said that 101 countries worldwide have already launched 5G services.

He said Pakistan will hold its 5G spectrum auction, with the government providing 597 megahertz of spectrum for the purpose.

He further said that following the COVID-19 pandemic, demand for spectrum has increased. He said that 97 percent of the country’s mobile towers are 4G, and connectivity in rural areas is affected by load-shedding. The new spectrum is expected to improve the quality of service.

5G spectrum to improve internet

5G spectrum launching is expected to dramatically improve Pakistan’s internet by providing significantly higher speeds (expected to exceed 50 Mbps minimum), reducing latency for real-time applications, and boosting network capacity.

It will enable smart cities, telemedicine (remote surgeries), advanced agriculture, and enhanced digital education, supporting over 1 million devices per 3 square km.
