LONDON (Kashmir English): Pakistan made a strong comeback in the second Test at Lord’s as England were restricted to 248 for nine on a rain-affected opening day.
Only 56 overs could be completed after persistent rain delayed the start, while poor light eventually forced the players off the field.
Pakistan won the toss and elected to field, with their pace attack taking full advantage of the overcast conditions. England were reduced to 36 for three, with veteran Mohammad Abbas making early breakthroughs.
Abbas dismissed Ben Duckett for 17, Emilio Gay for 8 and Joe Root for 4, putting England under severe pressure. Harry Brook, who scored 15, was then dismissed by Mohammad Ali.
England recovered through Jordan Cox and Dan Lawrence, who helped take the score to 120 before Lawrence was run out for 17.
Cox then formed a crucial 67-run partnership with Jamie Smith, helping England recover from their early collapse. Cox scored a fighting 55 before being dismissed after a brilliant catch by substitute fielder Salman Ali Agha.
Jamie Smith continued the recovery with an impressive 61, before Mohammad Ali bowled him.
England lost further wickets late in the day but managed to reach 248-9 before bad light ended play. Gus Atkinson was unbeaten on 34, while Josh Tongue was at the crease on one.
Abbas leads Pakistan’s bowling attack
Mohammad Abbas was Pakistan’s standout bowler, finishing with four wickets, while Mohammad Ali claimed three wickets. Khurram Shahzad also picked up one wicket.
With England nine wickets down, Pakistan will look to wrap up the innings early on day two and gain control of the match.
