Muzaffarabad: President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack on Chaudhry Latif Akbar’s convoy on Sunday.
According to state-run media, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif denounced a gun attack on Sunday that injured three people and targeted the speaker of the Pakistan-administered Kashmir area. They also urged authorities to take strong action against those responsible.
Chaudhry Latif Akbar is the speaker of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly. The speaker had travelled to a ceremony where a number of well-known Muslim Conference (MC) activists were expected to make announcements about their new party memberships. Akbar was on his way to Kikliot to witness the induction of members of a rival political group into the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).
The attack had left three PPP activists injured and caused indignation within the party. Attackers opened fire indiscriminately, injuring three PPP employees who were in the convoy. The names of the victims were Adil Imtiaz, who had an arm injury; Muhammad Riaz, who was hit in the shoulder; and Mubashir Hussain, who was shot in the head.
According to a report on Sunday by the official broadcaster Radio Pakistan, “President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have strongly condemned the incident of firing on the convoy of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Speaker.”
Zardari prayed for the injured people’s speedy recovery, calling the attack on the speaker a “cowardly and despicable act.”
In a party statement, the PPP chairman vehemently denounced the assault and called for the attackers to be taken into custody.
“Chairman PPP expressed gratitude that Speaker Chaudhry Latif Akbar remained unharmed in the attack and prayed for the swift recovery of the two injured individuals,” the statement read further “He also demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible for the attack.”
The prime minister of Pakistan prayed for the injured people’s speedy recovery during his remarks.
Radio Pakistan further reported, “The prime minister directed the authorities concerned to take immediate action and ensure the arrest of those responsible for the attack.”
