RAWALAKOT (Kashmir English): A security operation was launched in Rawalakot on Monday after armed individuals linked to the proscribed Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) opened indiscriminate fire near the New Bus Terminal, according to official sources.

Authorities claimed the armed group resorted to firing in a civilian area in an alleged attempt to provoke unrest and shift blame onto police and security personnel.

Officials said aerial surveillance detected the movement of the gunmen before police advanced towards the area.

According to the official account, the armed assailants opened fire on police, prompting Rangers to move in to support the operation. During the exchange of fire, one Rangers personnel was martyred while another sustained injuries.

Officials further alleged that the attackers used explosive devices and heavy weapons, targeting a police armoured personnel carrier (APC) and firing in surrounding areas.

Security officials stated that the incident highlights the presence of armed militants operating around Rawalakot and vowed to continue operations to restore law and order. An investigation into the incident is underway.
