ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The National Press Club (NPC) Islamabad has strongly condemned the torture and illegal detention of journalist and NPC executive Member Shahid Qureshi, calling the incident a serious attack on press freedom and the rights of journalists.
According to a statement issued by NPC Secretary General Dr. Furqan Rao, the journalist was subjected to torture and kept in unlawful detention for several hours by the administration of Sarhad University Islamabad.
The National Press Club said journalists should be allowed to perform their professional duties freely and without fear. It termed the alleged incident a violation of the fundamental rights and freedom of the press.
The NPC demanded that the relevant authorities conduct a transparent and immediate investigation into the incident and take action against those found responsible under the law.
The press body also called for effective measures to prevent such incidents in the future, stressing that journalists across the country should be able to carry out their professional responsibilities without intimidation, harassment or violence.
