ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Chairman Inam Haider Malik revealed on Thursday that the current monsoon spell would persist for two to three more days, according to a weather update.
Flood Situation and Relief Efforts
Malik said water levels continued to be high at Head Panjnad and Guddu Barrage, causing extensive flooding that damaged crops and washed away livestock in many areas. But he added that the flood scenario in the Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab rivers was now stable.
Rescue efforts are still in progress, with 2.4 million individuals being evacuated to safe areas in Punjab and 1.5 million being shifted in Sindh. Malik appreciated the assistance provided by welfare groups and emphasized that all government structures collaborated as they worked on enhancing future disaster response.
Relief Distribution
The chairman of NDMA reported that in certain regions, embankments were broken to ease pressure on rivers. He assured that 9,000 tents and ration bags were provided by the Punjab government, while more than 9,000 tons of food supplies were distributed among the affected communities in the province.
Forecast and Climate Challenges
Ahead, Malik predicted more rain in central Punjab and Azad Kashmir from September 16 to 18. He also emphasized the pressing need for concerted efforts against climate change, adding that the fast-paced melting of glaciers due to the increasing temperature was boosting flood threats.
