ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Former senator Mushahid Hussain Syed has strongly criticized a recent documentary by German broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW) on Pakistan’s nuclear programme, saying that the outlet produced a “crude, intellectually dishonest hatchet job” aimed at questioning the legitimacy and safety of Pakistan’s nuclear deterrent.
In a post on X, Mushahid alleged that the 52-minute documentary recycled “old propaganda” by linking Pakistan’s nuclear programme to religious extremism while ignoring key historical facts.
He slammed the documentary for stating that Pakistan had developed its nuclear weapons “illegally”, since, according to him, there was no universal process or legality involved in developing such weapons. He also blamed DW for not mentioning the nuclear weapons capacities of other nations, including India and Israel.
Mushahid went ahead to blame DW for failing to provide sufficient information on the 1998 nuclear tests carried out by Pakistan. He claimed that DW had neglected to inform viewers of the fact that Pakistan had conducted its test in reaction to India’s nuclear test at the same time.
The former Senator criticized the documentary on DW’s bias and lack of editorial policy. According to him, DW’s coverage of the documentary was an expression of its anti-Pakistani attitude, which was a reflection of Germany’s international standing.
Mushahid mentioned the failure of Germany to secure a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council in June 2026.
Furthermore, Mushahid referred back to the speech made by the then German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in 2025 in relation to the Iran-Israel dispute.
