MIRPUR (Kashmir English): Police have intensified legal action against individuals linked to the banned Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) after the Azad Jammu and Kashmir government revoked its earlier notification withdrawing cases related to the organisation during the May 2024 protest and other occasions.

Following the decision, Mirpur Police resumed proceedings in pending cases related to alleged damage to government property, vandalism, arson, and attacks on law enforcement personnel.

Officials said the cases have been reactivated, and the process of arresting the named accused is underway.

The Mirpur Police spokesperson said that the case of an alleged attack on the Assistant Commissioner and police officials at the Dadyal Police Station in 2024 has also been reopened, with the arrest of several suspects.

As per the spokesperson, Khawaja Sohail Mushtaq, identified as a close aide of JAAC core-member Khawaja Mehran and president of JKLF Dadyal, was the alleged mastermind behind the attack.

Police said Khawaja Sohail, along with five of his associates, have been arrested, while raids are continuing to apprehend other suspects.

Authorities say that some of the arrested persons have given statements during interrogation, which have been made part of the investigation record.

According to the police, further legal action will be taken in light of these statements after reviewing the available evidence.

Government sources said any attempt to take the law into one’s own hands, damage public or government property, incite violence, or disrupt public order would not be tolerated.

They maintained that action would continue in accordance with the law without discrimination.
