LONDON (Kashmir English): The unexpected results of the local elections in Britain have created a new political crisis in the country, with demands for Prime Minister Keir Starmer to resign.
According to global news agencies, after the ruling party’s worst defeat in local elections, several members of the ruling party resigned and also demanded a vote of confidence from the Prime Minister.
So far, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has not presented his stance on resigning, but due to pressure from over 80 percent of members, the ruling party has reportedly started looking for a new candidate.
Among the cabinet members whose names are being mentioned for the new Prime Minister of Britain, Kashmiri-origin Shabana Mahmood appears to be leading the race.
If she is elected, she will not only be the first Pakistani-origin but also the first Muslim Prime Minister of Britain.
However, nearly 100 Labour Party members still stand with Prime Minister Keir Starmer in his support. Significant developments regarding this are expected in the coming days.
Recently, Kashmiri-origin British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood also advised Prime Minister Keir Starmer to give a timeline for his resignation, but despite the pressure, the Prime Minister refused to resign and nominated new members in place of the resigning ministers.
Shabana Mahmood’s parents are from Mirpur
It is worth noting that Shabana Mahmood’s parents are from Mirpur, Azad Kashmir, while she was born in Britain.
Recently, she expressed pride in her parents’ connection to Kashmir.
