NEW YORK (Kashmir English): Iraq filed a complaint with the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Friday over Israel’s “violation of Iraqi airspace” in a major attack on Iran, Iraq’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

“These practices constitute a flagrant violation of Iraq’s sovereignty,” said the ministry, calling on “the Security Council to assume its responsibilities” and act to “prevent the recurrence of such violations”.

Blatant violation of Iraq’s sovereignty

Iraq, in the statement, described the actions as a “blatant violation” of its sovereignty and a breach of international law and the UN Charter, particularly principles regarding state sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs.

Baghdad urged the UNSC to assume its legal and moral responsibilities by taking action to prevent further violations, stressing the need to protect Iraq’s territorial integrity and contribute to regional stability.

Earlier in the day, three missiles were found in Iraqi desert areas in the central Diyala province and two others in the southern province of Dhi Qar, according to two security sources.

They said the missiles in Dhi Qar gouged a four-metre (13-feet) deep crater in the ground.

Iraq has denounced the “military aggression” launched by Israel against Iran, describing it as “a blatant violation of the fundamental principles of international law”.

The highest religious authority for millions of Shiite Muslims in Iraq and around the world, Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, also condemned “the crime committed by the entity occupying Palestine”.

He called on “the international community to pressure this aggressor and its allies to prevent the repetition of such attacks”.
