MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): Indian National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has announced to carry out reservoir flushing from Kishanganga Dam on May 10, India-occupied Kashmir-based media outlet, JKNS, reported.

As per details, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Gurez has issued an advisory, alerting residents living downstream of the Kishanganga Dam, adding that the reservoir flushing operation will start at 10:00 am and is expected to last for approximately 48 hours.

The media, citing officials, reported that during the flushing period, the water level in the river may rise abruptly and significantly, posing a safety risk to people near the riverbanks.

According to NHPC, the siren will be sounded before the release of water as a warning measure. The public has been strictly advised to stay away from the river during the flushing period and take necessary safety precautions.

Authorities have stressed that public cooperation is essential to avoid any untoward incidents during the operation, the JKNS added.

The development came after the Indian government unlawfully started water storage at multiple reservoirs in the Kashmir region, built on the western rivers of the Indus River system, posing a water crisis threat to downstream areas, particularly in Pakistan.
