LAHORE (Kashmir English): The Punjab government has launched a landmark electric bike (e-bike) initiative that will allow students to buy electric motorcycles via zero-interest monthly instalments worth just Rs. 2,100, offering an affordable and eco-friendly travel solution across the province.

The move was approved during a meeting of the Punjab Transport Department presided over by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Tuesday.

As part of its grand plan, the provincial government wants to distribute 100,000 electric bikes to students in Punjab in the next year. To make them more affordable, the government will give a subsidy of Rs. 70,000 on every e-bike.

Students selected under the scheme will have to pay a down payment of Rs. 14,000, followed by interest-free monthly instalments of Rs.2,100.

In a major relief package for female students, CM Maryam Nawaz said that the Punjab govt will bear both the down payment as well as registration fee for deserving ladies, and only instalments will be charged from the female students.

The facility has also been extended to Punjab govt employees who can avail an easy & affordable EMI plan to buy electric bikes.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be enrolled as a regular student in a degree college or university in Punjab recognised by the Higher Education Commission (HEC).
  • Have a valid motorcycle learner’s permit or driving licence.
  • “If the number of applications is more than the available quota, beneficiaries will be selected through an e-balloting process,” officials noted.

The government said the initiative will ease the burden of students while reducing travelling costs and promoting environment-friendly vehicles throughout the province.
