LAHORE (Kashmir English): Inflation has hit Pakistan again as consumers in Lahore are bearing the brunt of soaring food expenses, as prices of ghee and cooking oil surged yet again in the city’s open market, further stretching the budgets of families.

Local grocers said the latest increase ranged between Rs5 and Rs30 per kg depending on grades of ghee and cooking oil.

They said the price of Grade I ghee/cooking oil has gone up by Rs5 per kg, with the commodity being sold between Rs580 and Rs610 per kg in the open market.

Similarly, the price of Grade-II ghee and cooking oil has gone up by Rs. 10 per kg, bringing the new retail price to Rs. 570 per kg.

The sharpest increase was recorded for Grade-III ghee, which has become Rs. 30 per kg more expensive and is now being sold at Rs. 490 per kg.

The latest hike comes as consumers continue to struggle with elevated prices of essential food items despite recent improvements in Pakistan’s overall inflation rate.

While headline inflation has eased compared to last year, fluctuating edible oil prices, transportation costs and supply chain pressures continue to impact retail food prices in local markets.

The increase will further strain household budgets, particularly those of low- and middle-income families, as ghee and cooking oil remain among the most widely used kitchen essentials in Pakistan.
