KARACHI (Kashmir English): Experts have warned of a new wave of inflation after the floods. The recent devastating rains and floods have not only affected thousands of homes but also destroyed standing crops, causing farmers to suffer more losses than expected.
Climate change expert Fatima Yameen says that the real test of government agencies after the floods will be how they control the rising prices of food items.
According to her, it is not just a problem of crop destruction, but also the fertility of the land has been severely affected. While floodwaters bring disasters with them, they also make the fields barren by laying a thick layer of sand on the land, which farmers have to spend millions of rupees to make cultivable again.
She warned that farmers will not be able to settle their lands by giving just a few thousand rupees, and the government must provide all possible support.
She said that flour prices have currently increased by 5 percent, but a further increase is expected next week, after which the government will have to import wheat from abroad.
Fatima Yameen said that we have not been able to overcome the effects of the 2022 floods to date; this time too, the slow pace of institutions will increase the problems.
According to her, the next flood could be much more dangerous than the current disaster, but the weakness of our system is that it takes several months for aid and rations to reach the victims because the SOPs are decades old.
