NEW YORK (Kashmir English): The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) announced that the winners of the World Cup will be awarded championship rings in addition to the traditional trophy and gold medals.
Spain and Argentina will play the grand finale of the World Cup at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, New York, this Sunday, July 19, with a new prize at stake.
In a statement, the football body said that the first-ever bespoke championship rings would be presented at a FIFA competition to the tournament winners, “bringing one of the most recognisable American sporting traditions to the global game.”
A limited edition of 2,026 individually numbered rings will be created. Of these, 30 will be handed to the winning team, while the other 1,996 will be made available to fans worldwide to purchase as an Official Licensed Product.
The federation further added that one side of the ring proudly features the FIFA World Cup trophy, while the other will be customised to reflect the identity of the winning team.
“Each ring will be individually numbered, custom-fitted, and delivered with its own certificate of authenticity,” FIFA said.
“Immediately after the final, the captain and head coach of the winning team will receive temporary rings to commemorate the occasion.”
Each of the 30 rings for the winners will then be customised before being officially presented at a later date, ensuring the perfect lifelong fit for an achievement that will echo through eternity, the statement added.
