ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The Federal Cabinet has proposed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif advise the President to impose an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution, according to a press release issued by the Prime Minister’s Office on Sunday.

The proposal followed a detailed review of the province’s law and order situation and the deteriorating security environment amid rising terrorism concerns.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the Cabinet was briefed on the worsening security conditions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and expressed concern over what it described as the provincial government’s deliberate disengagement from counterterrorism efforts.

Taking into account the gravity of the situation, the Cabinet proposed invoking the relevant constitutional provisions to impose an emergency in the province.

The press release confirmed that the Prime Minister’s advice has been forwarded from the Prime Minister’s House to the Presidency.

The announcement concerns a proposed constitutional measure. The press release does not state that the President has formally proclaimed an emergency; any further action would depend on the constitutional process.
