ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Public holidays are anticipated in Pakistan towards the end of this month with the commencement of the month of Muharram 2026 in the Islamic calendar, indicating the start of a new Hijri year.

Based on early estimations using the lunar calendar, it is predicted that 1st Muharram will take place in mid-June 2026. Public holidays in this regard are expected to be observed on 9th and 10th Muharram, known as Ashura and the day preceding it.

These holidays will most probably take place on June 24 and June 25, 2026, after the formal moon sighting declaration by the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.

It is usually a practice in the country that the Government of Pakistan announces holidays for both 9th and 10th Muharram. All governmental offices, banks, schools, and colleges are closed during the observance of these holidays, and certain businesses work limitedly depending on security conditions.

The official announcement regarding the holidays will be made soon afterwards.

Summer Vacations

Summer Vacation Timetable of the University of Sindh has been officially announced for all institutes, departments, centers, and campuses for two months, starting from June 1 to July 31.

According to the notice issued by the registrar’s office on Friday, classes shall resume on August 3, following the vacation period.

It has also been notified that directors and chairpersons will be present in the office twice weekly, i.e., on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the vacation.

According to the notice, Pro Vice Chancellors, Dean of Faculties, administrative officials, and other assisting staff members will perform their regular duties as usual.

Assisting staff comprises programmers, superintendents, clerks, laboratory assistants, internet operators, computer operators, guards, and peons.

Furthermore, it has been advised to the faculty members to submit the semester examination result sheets to the concerned directors and chairpersons before June 1.

Earlier, the Sindh Education Department announced that summer vacation for schools in the province will be observed from June 1 to July 31.

A statement issued by the government said the decision would apply to all public and private schools across the province.

The development came hours after Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat announced the summer vacation schedule for the province.
