“Exceptional High Flood” warning issued for Jhelum River at Mangla

MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) of Azad Kashmir has predicted the “exceptional high flood” conditions in the catchment areas of the Jhelum River at Mangla Dam in the next 24 hours.

The Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicted a flood ranging between 350,000 to 450,000 cusecs over upstream at Mangla.

The Met Department said that the associated Nullahs of River Jhelum may attain “high level flood” during the next 24 Hours.

“Due to continuous and heavy rains in Azad Kashmir and the upper catchment areas of the Jhelum River, there is a serious threat of Exceptional High Flood in the Jhelum River during the next 24 hours,” the PDMA Punjab said in a flood warning.

Authorities have been advised to remain alert and take necessary measures to avoid any untoward situation during the forecast period. The SDMA has advised taking precautionary measures in downstream areas of Muzaffarabad, particularly for those living on the banks of the dam and the river.

The SDMA has urged citizens to stay vigilant and follow official safety protocols amid the high risk of flooding.
