ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) seeking an increase in electricity tariffs by Rs 2.56 per unit, under the monthly fuel price adjustment for September.

According to the request, the proposed hike is intended to recover from consumers the additional fuel costs incurred during electricity generation in September.

NEPRA will hold a public hearing on October 29 regarding the CPPA’s request for the recovery of these additional costs under the monthly fuel price adjustment for September.

In its submission, the CPPA stated that the average fuel cost for electricity generation in September was initially set at Rs 7.46 per unit; however, the actual cost rose to Rs 10.02 per unit.

The request details that during September, Rs 7.95 billion was spent on electricity generation using local coal, while Rs 37.14 billion was spent on generation using imported coal.

Similarly, costs for electricity generation amounted to Rs 13.26 billion for diesel and Rs 11.81 billion for furnace oil.

According to the CPPA, Rs 13.89 billion was spent on electricity generation using local gas, while the cost for generation using imported Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) stood at Rs 31.93 billion.

The request further indicates that the total fuel cost for electricity generation during the month of September reached Rs 127.87 billion. According to the CPPA, electricity distribution companies sold a total of 12.76 billion units of electricity during September.

NEPRA will make a decision regarding the proposed increase in electricity prices after reviewing the CPPA’s request and hearing the viewpoints of the relevant stakeholders.
