ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Pakistan’s Economic Affairs Division X account was hacked, and the government confirmed in a statement.
The official X account of Pakistan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs was hacked late Thursday night, the ministry confirmed in a statement issued Friday morning.
According to a spokesperson, the unauthorized activity on the account occurred overnight. “At present, any post made on X has no connection with the ministry,” the statement clarified, urging the public to disregard any recent updates from the account.
The hacking incident came shortly after a controversial post appeared on the account, reportedly appealing to international partners for additional financial assistance amid rising regional tensions with India. The ministry, however, categorically denied posting the appeal and stated it is working with X to have the account taken down or secured.
“We are working to have the Twitter (X) switched off,” a ministry official told Reuters, emphasizing, “We did not tweet that.”
The breach coincides with the recent restoration of X services in Pakistan, which had been banned since February 2024. Access was officially restored on May 7, though users had previously been relying on Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to use the platform.
Authorities have not yet disclosed who may be behind the cyberattack or whether any sensitive information was compromised. An investigation is reportedly underway.
