Courts in Azad Kashmir shut down in protest over senior lawyers killing

MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): Due to the death of senior lawyer Mirza Nawaz Jarral Advocate, all courts in Azad Kashmir, including the High Court headquarters in Muzaffarabad and its circuit benches in Rawalakot, Kotli, and Mirpur, as well as all district courts, will remain closed today, April 22.

According to details, following the killing of senior legal figure Mirza Nawaz Jarral Advocate (from Bernala), Chief Justice Sadaqat Hussain Raja has approved the closure of the courts in Azad Kashmir including the Azad Kashmir High Court in Muzaffarabad along with all three circuit benches.

All district courts in Azad Kashmir will remain closed by order of the Chief Justice. Additionally, lawyers have announced a strike in response to the death of Mirza Nawaz Jarral Advocate.

It is worth mentioning that the well-known lawyer was shot and killed near Thathi Chowk in the Dhandar area of Bhimber.

According to the Vice Chairman of the Azad Jammu and Kashmirs (AJK) Bar Council, lawyers across Azad Kashmir will go on strike Tuesday and not appear in court. Bar associations throughout Azad Kashmir will hold protest demonstrations in their respective districts.

Senior Advocate Mirza Muhammad Nawaz Jaral was gunned down yesterday near Dhandar in Bhimber district, Azad Kashmir.

According to reports, he was traveling in his car when an unidentified assailant opened fire near Thathi Chowk, killing him on the spot.

Police arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, secured the area, and launched an investigation. A search operation is currently underway to track down the suspect.

The deceased’s body was shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital in Bhimber for a postmortem examination.
