MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) nominee Barrister Syed Iftikhar Ali Gilani has submitted his nomination papers for the election of the new Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

Gilani was nominated by PML-N President Nawaz Sharif for the top constitutional office after consultations within the party leadership. He was directed to complete the nomination process ahead of the AJK Legislative Assembly session.

The AJK Legislative Assembly is scheduled to elect the new prime minister today, August 28. According to the revised schedule, nomination papers are being filed from 9:30 am to 10:30 am, followed by scrutiny and the display of the candidates’ list. The election is scheduled for 2 pm after Friday prayers.

The PML-N currently holds a strong position in the 53-member AJK Legislative Assembly, with 31 members and the support of an allied Awami Dast-o-Bazu lawmaker, taking its effective strength to 32. The PPP has 14 members.

Gilani, who was elected to the AJK Assembly on a technocrat seat, has pledged to focus on development, public service, protection of citizens’ rights and prosperity in Azad Kashmir if elected.

The election will determine the 17th Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, with the new premier expected to take the oath later today.
