ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): A claim circulating online about the alleged cancellation of the Diamer-Bhasha hydropower project has been rejected as false, with relevant departments reportedly confirming that there is no leaked document, cancellation order, or official decision backing the claim.
According to journalist Syed Talat Hussain, who said he spoke to the relevant departments regarding the matter, officials categorically denied the existence of any such document or decision, describing the report as a “classic fake.”
This clarification has followed an exclusive report from a US-based website stating that the power component of the Diamer-Bhasha project, worth 4,500 megawatts, has been cancelled.
As per the clarification issued by Hussain, it is for the Economic Affairs Division (EAD) to seek external financing. On the other hand, the cancellation of power projects is not within their purview.
“The power component of the Diamer Bhasha project, having 4,500 megawatts capacity, is a committed project which has also been incorporated in the 2025-35 generation plan,” it states.
“The Power Division has also committed to integrate the electricity produced from the project into the national grid, for which the required generation capacity needs to be developed.”
In essence, the clarification has rejected the claims of cancellation of the project as being sensational disinformation.
