ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) President Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry has welcomed US President Donald Trump’s offer to mediate between India and Pakistan on the long-standing Kashmir issue.
He made these remarks during a meeting with Zachary Harkenrider, Counselor for Political Affairs at the US Embassy in Islamabad, at the Aiwan-e-Sadr in Kashmir House, Islamabad. US Embassy Political Counselor was accompanied by US Embassy official Elizabeth Bennion.
In a meeting, Chaudhry expressed gratitude for Trump’s efforts towards peace in the region and emphasized the need for a permanent ceasefire to avoid a nuclear war between the two nations.
On this occasion, President Barrister Sultan briefed the senior officials of the US Embassy about the Kashmir issue and the latest situation in Indian occupied Kashmir.
“While we Kashmiris appreciate the efforts of US President Donald Trump for peace, we thank him for offering to mediate between India and Pakistan on the Kashmir issue, and we welcome his offer wholeheartedly,” the President said.
Furthermore, Chaudhry urged the US to play a leading role in resolving the dispute according to UN resolutions.
The AJK President highlighted the risks of a nuclear war between Pakistan and India, stressing the need for international intervention to prevent such a catastrophe.
Chaudhry emphasized the importance of providing the Kashmiri people with their right to self-determination, in accordance with UN resolutions.
“The key to peace in South Asia lies in the resolution of the Kashmir issue,” he said. “India can take any frivolous action in a panic at this time because both Pakistan and India are nuclear powers.”
During the meeting, the AJK President also expressed appreciation for the role of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in mediating the Kashmir dispute.
