What is laparoscopic surgery?

Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive surgical technique that uses a laparoscope device. A laparoscope is a thin, long tube with a high-intensity light and a high-resolution camera at the front.

The device is inserted through an incision in the abdominal wall. As it advances, the camera sends images to a video monitor.

Open surgery requires a 6- to 12-inch incision on the body, while laparoscopic surgery involves 2 to 4 small incisions of half an inch or less. One incision is made for the camera, while the other is made to insert surgical instruments.
