MEXICO CITY (Kashmir English): Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the legendary Estadio Azteca on Thursday.
The game was defined by high drama, featuring two goals and three red cards.
Mexican center-back César Montes picked up a late straight red card for a clumsy challenge on Khuliso Mudau, meaning he will miss Mexico’s next match.
With this victory, co-hosts Mexico secured 3 points to lead Group A, while South Africa must regroup before facing the Czech Republic.
Mexico dominated World Cup opener
Mexico dominated the curtain-raiser from the beginning, supported by a roaring home crowd of over 80,000 fans.
While El Tri controlled 61% of possession and outshot South Africa 16 to 4, the second half quickly turned into a battle of discipline, as Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio dismissed three players.
South Africa was reduced to nine men when substitute Themba Zwane was sent off following a VAR review for striking Roberto Alvarado in the face.
