LEEPA VALLEY (Kashmir English): Heavy snowfall and avalanches have forced the closure of Reshian-Leepa Road for all traffic, with authorities warning travellers to avoid unnecessary movement until weather conditions improve.
The Reshian-Leepa Road, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) has been completely closed to all types of traffic following ongoing heavy snowfall and torrential rain since yesterday. The road is now hidden in a dense layer of snow, blocking it completely, while multiple avalanches have also been reported at various points along the route.
Recently, the Meteorological Department had predicted heavy rain and snowfall until March 2, prompting authorities to warn residents and tourists about travel disruptions and extreme cold.
According to a spokesperson from the Highways Department, the most impacted area of the road extends from Sher Gali Top to Alhamdulillah Mor, where severe avalanches are happening. Also, the ongoing heavy snowfall and strong icy winds have made road support impossible at this stage. The extreme weather conditions are posing significant problems in deploying heavy machinery, making any repair work impossible at the moment.
The Highways Department has published a public alert, encouraging residents and travellers to avoid any movement along the Reshian-Leepa Road. Given the high risk of further snowfall and avalanches, passengers are firmly advised against unnecessary travel. Authorities have stressed that attempting to guide the road in its current state could be extremely risky.
Officials have assured the public that as soon as the weather improves, quick steps will be taken to restore the road. However, for now, people are encouraged to exercise caution and strictly stick to the safety guidelines issued by the administration. The department has stressed that public cooperation is necessary to stop any tragic incidents during these extreme weather conditions.
Meanwhile, residents of Leepa Valley and surrounding areas continue to face extreme difficulties due to the ongoing snowfall, which has disrupted daily life and transport. Many parts of the region remain cut off, and authorities are closely surveying the crisis.
The Highways Department and local administration have repeated their promise to reopen the road as soon as circumstances allow. Until then, they have urged everyone to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay updated with official advisories.
