CM Punjab Maryam announces free public transport, targeted subsidy

LAHORE (Kashmir English): Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Friday announced free public transport and targeted subsidies for farmers, motorcycle owners, and transporters across the province, a day after the federal government hiked petrol and diesel prices.

In a post on X, PML-N, the provincial ruling party, said that in response to the ongoing global crisis, CM Maryam Nawaz has announced a major relief package to support the people of Punjab.

“To ease the burden on citizens, public transport is now FREE across all cities in Punjab! No tickets required for Orange Line Train, Metro Bus, Speedo Bus, and Green Electric Buses, making travel easier and more affordable for everyone,” it wrote.

Subsidy for farmers, motorcycle owners

Furthermore, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has also decided to provide cash for agriculture, food, and farmer protection.

It announced that the Punjab chief minister has announced a Rs100 per liter subsidy on diesel per acre to farmers.

Moreover, every registered motorcycle owner will receive a Rs100 subsidy for up to 20 liters.

The government has also decided to provide subsidies to motorcyclists, under which every registered bike owner will receive a Rs 100 subsidy on 20 liters of fuel.

Targeted subsidy

Furthermore, CM Maryam, on an official X account, announced a targeted monthly subsidy of Rs70,000 for registered goods transport vehicles, Rs80,000 for large transport vehicles, and Rs100,000 for public service buses.

“As this relief has been extended to ease your operational burden, transporters across Punjab are urged to act responsibly and refrain from passing the increased costs on to consumers and passengers,” she said.

“People won’t be left alone in tough times, and we urge citizens to prefer public transport,” the chief minister was quoted as saying.

Furthermore, Maryam Nawaz praised Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif for maintaining the supply and prices of petroleum products for a month despite the global crisis, according to the statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office.

“By providing relief of billions of rupees in one month, the Prime Minister made a full and sincere effort to save the people from difficulties,” the Chief Minister said. “Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has provided relief to the people in the worst economic situation.”

“In these extraordinary circumstances, citizens should use public transport instead of personal vehicles,” she appealed to the public. “Promises that as the situation improves, the people will be relieved of the economic burden.”

Islamabad Free Public Transport

The Islamabad administration has also made public transport free for the general public for a month in the federal capital. 

Taking on X, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said, “On the directions of the Prime Minister, all public transport in Islamabad will be made free of cost for the general public for the next 30 days, starting tomorrow.”

He further said that the Ministry of Interior will bear the expenditure of Rs350 million for this public relief initiative.
