MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): Local government representatives in Muzaffarabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), protested by blocking the main highway against the Local Government Act 1990 revival, passed a resolution opposing it, and warned the government of a mass demonstration at the Legislative Assembly if their demands were not met by February 25.

The representatives of local government conducted a protest at the capital’s main traffic route to ask for the repeal of the Local Government Act from 1990. Chairman Union Council Muzaffarabad organized the demonstration and he also convened a council meeting on Airport Road with his supervision.

The local council participants at the gathering expressed their continued opposition to the 1990 Local Government Act reimplementation during this event. The attendees unanimously backed the resolution opposing the 1990 Local Government Act by voting with their hands. Participants at the event expressed their opinion to the government about why they believed the existing law should not be put into practice because present institutional requirements had evolved.

The representatives who spoke to the gathering issued a serious order to the government by establishing February 25 as the deadline for their demands to be met. The representatives declared their intention to start an extensive political sit-in at the Legislative Assembly with public and local government representatives who would march toward the assembly from various regions of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Local representatives now lead a movement which displays their increasing dissatisfaction with the 1990 Act revival because they expect it to reduce their authority and slow down local government functions. The protestors insisted that the lawmakers should create more progressive governing guidelines rather than bringing back old-fashioned regulations.

Protestors demanded serious consideration of their issues from management as a means to prevent upcoming extensive rallies. Members of the local government declared their continued support for developing an autonomous and effective system of regional governance in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

People are observing government activities until the deadline while anticipating both local representative agreement acceptance and potential upcoming movement expansion.
