KARACHI (Kashmir English): The Sindh government on Tuesday announced a public holiday for all public and private schools and colleges across the province on the occasion of Shab-e-Meraj.
According to a notification issued by the School Education and Literacy Department, both government and private educational institutions in Sindh will remain closed on Saturday, January 17, 2026.
“The decision was taken in pursuance of the resolution approved by the Sub-Committee of the Steering Committee on Education during its meeting held on November 28, 2024,” the notification said.
Muslims every year on the 27th of Rajab observe the Shab-e-Meraj to mark the Isra (journey) and Meraj (ascension) of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), who was taken on a special journey to meet Allah Almighty, crossing seven skies on the heavenly animal named ‘al-Buraq’.
Shab-e-Meraj holds great importance in Islamic beliefs as this night is considered a night of worship, repentance, and supplications to seek the mercy and forgiveness of Allah Almighty.
On this night, people recite the Quran, offer voluntary prayers, intend to fast, and ask Allah for forgiveness for their sins.
Special gatherings of remembrance and supplication are organized in mosques and Islamic centers on this night, where scholars and religious leaders share with people the virtues of this night and the methods of worship.
