PMD signs deal to set up automatic weather stations across Pakistan

KARACHI (Kashmir English): In a major step aimed to improve early climate warnings and forecasting capabilities, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has signed an agreement to install advanced, high-tech automatic weather stations across the country.

According to the PMD, the project is being funded by the World Bank. The PMD has entered into a formal agreement for the installation of advanced automatic weather stations (AWS) under a World Bank-funded program.

Director General PMD Sahibzada Khan said the agreement represents a milestone, adding that high-tech sensor-equipped AWS systems were being installed in Pakistan for the first time.

Under the project, the stations will be set up in various cities nationwide, significantly expanding the country’s meteorological monitoring network.

Weather monitoring system in Pakistan

Weather monitoring in Pakistan is primarily managed by the Pakistan Meteorological Department, which is currently undergoing a massive modernization through the World Bank-funded Hydromet Project.

The primary monitoring agencies include Pakistan Meteorological Department, the national authority under the Ministry of Defence responsible for weather forecasting, flood warnings, and climate monitoring.

While SUPARCO operates the Pakistan Space Weather Centre, monitoring space-based phenomena using ground sensors and satellite data for communication and navigation safety.
