PESHAWAR (Kashmir English): A 4.9 magnitude earthquake was felt in various districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), including Peshawar, on Friday night, spreading panic among the people. The tremors were felt in the areas of Bajaur, Khyber, Mohmand, and Malakand.
According to the PMD’s Seismological Center, the depth of the earthquake was 10 kilometers, and the epicenter was recorded near the border areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The earthquake tremors were severe that people came out of their houses and shops, but no reports of any loss of life or property have been received so far.
According to Rescue 1122 and the district administration, all institutions are on alert, and teams have been dispatched to assess the possible damage. Local hospitals have also been alerted in view of the emergency.
The Meteorological Department and the Seismological Center are appealing to citizens to avoid rumors and take precautions in view of possible aftershocks after the earthquake.
The earthquake is the second in 24 hours, as on Thursday night, a 5.9 earthquake jolted Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and various districts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar.
The National Seismic Monitoring Center of the Meteorological Department said that many other cities of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) provinces felt the quake.
The seismic center reported that the epicenter of the quake was the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan at a depth of 111 kilometres. It was recorded at 9:56 pm (PST), according to the PMD.
No immediate reports of casualties or damage have been received.
