Voting ends in Bangladesh Elections 2026, close contest expected

DHAKA (Kashmir English): The voting process for the Bangladesh Elections 2026 has been completed, with 50 political parties participating in the elections.

More than 127 million voters exercised their right to vote. Polling, which began at 7:30 am local time in 299 constituencies across the country, continued until 4:30 pm.

Candidates from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, National Citizens Party, and Jamaat-e-Islami, among others, are competing for 300 parliamentary seats, while a majority of 151 seats out of 300 is required to form a government.

Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s son, Tariq Rahman, is the candidate for the prime minister from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, while Shafiqur Rahman is a strong candidate for the prime minister from the Jamaat-e-Islami.

The National Citizen Party, which includes Gen Z, who played an important role in the overthrow of Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina Wajid in August 2024, is also part of the Jamaat-e-Islami alliance.

Due to the ban, the Awami League candidates are not participating in the Bangladesh Elections 2026.

There are tight security arrangements across the country for the general elections, and the army has been deployed.

The Chief Election Commissioner of Bangladesh says that steps have been completed to make the electoral process transparent, free, and impartial.

It should be noted that a recent public survey conducted in Bangladesh regarding the national parliamentary elections has predicted a tough competition between the BNP and the alliance led by the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.

According to the survey, the alliance led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is likely to get 44.1 percent of the votes, while the alliance consisting of 11 political parties led by the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami may get 43.9 percent of the votes.
