RIYADH (Kashmir English): The United Arab Emirates and several other gulf countries are celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr with religious fervor today on Sunday.

The grand congregations for Eid prayers were held at the Grand Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah.

Earlier, the Saudi Supreme Council confirmed the sighting of the Shawwal moon after which a wave of joy centered Saudi Arabia and other gulf countries are celebrating Eid today.

The Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee and the zonal committees will separately convene today evening (March 30) to sight the moon of Shawwal, marking the potential end of the holy month of Ramadan.

The Committee’s meeting will take place at the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony office in the federal capital where religious scholars, meteorological experts, and other stakeholders will participate in the deliberations to verify moon sighting reports coming from across the country.

Eid-ul-Fitr likely on March 31

The announcement of the moon sighting will determine the final date for Eid-ul-Fitr – possibly March 31 (tomorrow) or January 1 – across Pakistan.

Ramadan began in Pakistan on March 2 after the Ruet-i-Hilal Committee met on February 28 and said the Ramazan moon had not been sighted in Pakistan.

Last month, the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) had forecast that the holy month of Ramadan would begin on March 2, while Eid-ul-Fitr would be observed on the 31st of March.
