WASHINGTON (Kashmir English): U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that an Iran-Israel ceasefire is now in effect, bringing a temporary halt to 12 days of intense military conflict between the two nations. Trump announced on his social media platform, urging both sides not to violate the agreement.
“The Iran-Israel ceasefire is now in effect. Please do not violate it!” Trump posted on Truth Social, adding that Iran had agreed to stop missile launches immediately, and Israel had promised to halt its military strikes shortly afterwards.
The US leader had earlier said the Iran-Israel ceasefire truce would be a phased 24-hour process beginning at around 0400 GMT Tuesday, with Iran unilaterally halting all operations first. He said Israel would follow suit 12 hours later.
Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi expressed gratitude toward the Iranian armed forces who punished Israel for its aggression until the very last minute.
“The military operations of our powerful Armed Forces to punish Israel for its aggression continued until the very last minute, at 4 am,” Araghchi wrote on the X social media platform.
“Together with all Iranians, I thank our brave Armed Forces who remain ready to defend our dear country until their last drop of blood, and who responded to any attack by the enemy until the very last minute.”
Despite the Iran-Israel ceasefire, hostilities continue on both sides
According to Iranian state media, the Iran-Israel ceasefire officially began late Monday. However, Israel has not confirmed the ceasefire and reported continued missile attacks from Iran, including a barrage that killed at least four civilians in Beersheba. More rockets were reportedly fired even after the ceasefire was supposed to begin, casting doubt on how stable the agreement really is.
Simultaneously, Israeli forces reportedly carried out overnight attacks on Tehran, with Iranian state media confirming explosions and anti-aircraft fire lighting up the skies over the capital. International media reported that from Tehran, and they witnessed the air defense systems in action.
Iranian state television claimed that a ceasefire had been “imposed on the enemy” following what it described as a powerful military response to “US aggression.”
Israel, joined by the United States on the weekend, has carried out attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities, after alleging Tehran was getting close to obtaining a nuclear weapon.
“On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, ‘THE 12 DAY WAR’,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social site.
Trump’s statement concluded with a call for peace, saying he hoped this Iran-Israel ceasefire would “last forever.”
