ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The Ministry of IT and Telecom in Pakistan has submitted the Telecom Equipment Standards Regulations to the Cabinet Committee for Legislative Cases for review, aiming to enforce quality standards and enhance telecom security.
The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) has submitted the proposed Telecom Equipment Standards Regulations to the Cabinet Committee for Legislative Cases (CCLC) for review, according to local media reports.
The draft had already been examined by the Ministry of Law and forwarded to the Cabinet Division. The Cabinet Division sent the document back requiring the CCLC to conduct a review before the final approval from the federal cabinet. The eventual official establishment of the regulations has become possible after completing this procedure.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) presented in its new annual report the creation of the Standards and Conformance Assurance Directorate which operates as a specific body to create testing procedures based on regulatory demands.
This directorate carries out the duty of testing all telecom devices for standard compliance before commercial release. Public safety and security depend on this initiative which prevents improper equipment from entering the market.
Multiple entities including telecom operators and manufacturers together with importers will experience direct influence from the introduced regulations. They cover crucial aspects such as electromagnetic compatibility, health and safety, and radio frequency compliance. The primary objective is to prevent the circulation of low-quality or non-compliant devices that could affect network performance or pose risks to users.
According to a PTA document, strict testing protocols will help ensure uninterrupted communication services and minimise technical issues caused by non-compliant equipment. This regulatory enforcement system exists to protect consumer rights together with business interests alongside strengthening the telecommunications infrastructure of Pakistan.
The review of CCLC has concluded and federal cabinet members now need to determine whether they will approve the suggested regulations. The framework succeeds in strengthening telecom equipment oversight which results in promoting the market entry of quality products.
