MIRPUR (Kashmir English): Azad Kashmir Police has decided to form a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to probe the minor Tasmia Sohail murder case after her heirs expressed distrust in the police investigation.
According to police, an accused named Mumtaz Shah was arrested from Faisalabad on August 3, four days after a report emerged about the disappearance of a six-year-old girl from Saidpur Pilan in Khuiratta, Kotli district.
Following the arrest, SSP Kotli said that the accused was an employee of the victim’s neighbors, hired for livestock, and was a resident of Jhang district. The girl’s shoes and other items were also recovered from the accused during the identification.
The police spokesperson confirmed that the DIG Office Mirpur has issued a letter to high authorities, requesting the formation of JIT after the victim’s father, Muhammad Sohail, expressed constant distress over the investigation in the case.
The spokesperson said that an investigation team was formed at the district level to investigate the case, on which the heirs of the deceased expressed distrust. “Later, the Central Police Office Muzaffarabad, formed an investigation team consisting of senior officers, on which the deceased’s father also expressed distrust.”
“Due to the demand of the victim’s father, Sohail, the higher authorities have been urged to form a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to investigate the case,” the statement added.
Earlier, on August 25, Tasmia’s father addressed a press conference at the National Press Club in Islamabad, demanding the formation of a JIT.
Sohail said that Tasmia was kidnapped on July 29, after which she was allegedly raped, then brutally murdered, and her body was thrown at a deserted place.
He further said that killers and facilitators should be traced and justice should be provided. His wife and lawyer were also present at the press conference.
