ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Today, on December 22, will be considered the shortest day of the year. According to astronomers, this phenomenon occurs every year in December and is of great astronomical importance.

According to astronomers, the longest night will begin at 8:03 pm. Midnight will be the longest night of the year in the northern hemisphere of the Earth, and Monday will be the shortest day of the year. In Karachi, during this time, the night will be 13 hours and 25 minutes, while the day will be 10 hours and 35 minutes. This difference makes this day the shortest day of the year.

When and why does this phenomenon occur

According to experts, this event occurs every year in the month of December, and its dates can be any day between December 20 and 23. This year, this phenomenon is occurring on the night and day of December 22.

The longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere is called the “winter solstice” or northern solstice in astronomical terms.

Earth’s tilt and its role

According to astronomers, the Earth is tilted about 23.4 degrees on its axis, and during its rotation, the Earth’s axis wobbles like a spinning top. There comes a time in the year during its rotation around the sun when the extreme tilt of the Earth’s axis towards the north turns in the opposite direction from the sun, resulting in the longest night in the Northern Hemisphere.

Why do the days start to get longer?

Experts say that the Earth’s rotation is a continuous process, so immediately after this event, the tilt of the Earth’s axis starts to reverse, and the northern hemisphere starts to tilt towards the sun again.

As a result of this change, the nights start to get shorter and the days gradually get longer immediately after the winter solstice.
