ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Pakistan may host US-Iran peace talks later this week, American journalist Michael Kugelman said on Monday.
In a post on X, he said that Islamabad has been pitching itself as a mediator in recent days, and that Pakistan was praised last year for its willingness to play an Iran mediation role.
His statement comes amid Pakistan efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East. Michael Kugelman is an American foreign policy author and expert specialising in South Asia. He is also a columnist for the Foreign Policy Magazine and his work covers Afghanistan, India, and Pakistan.
Pakistan as mediator in Iran crisis
Financial Times has also reported that Pakistan has become active as go-between to defuse tensions between the United States and Iran.
It said Asim Munir used Tehran ties and warm relationship with US president Donald Trump to boost mediation effort.
The publication reported that Pakistan’s army chief Asim Munir spoke to Donald Trump on Sunday, according to two people briefed on the call.
It further said that Pakistan is positioning itself as the lead mediator trying to broker an end to the US and Israel war on Iran, using its military strongman’s ties to Tehran and warm relationship with Donald Trump.
Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif also held talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Monday, according to the Financial Times.
