SOST (Hunza), Pakistan (Kashmir English): The National Logistics Corporation (NLC) has significantly improved infrastructure at the Sost Dry Port to keep it operation even during extremely harsh weather.
Lieutenant Colonel Basharat Khan Jadoon told a private Tv channel that NLC commenced its operations at Sost Dry Port in April 2018. “Initially, its infrastructure was developed to improve existing facilities, ensuring all necessary requirements for traders and cargo processing were met. Subsequently, it was observed that a significant amount of cargo would get stuck every year after November 30, when the port used to close, especially in Kashgar, China, and its surrounding areas.”
He said considering this situation, the National Logistics Corporation further enhanced its capacity and provided various facilities to ensure the movement of cargo continued even during the closure period.
Consequently, the port was kept open during 2024-25 and 2025-26. “Last year, approximately 597 vehicles arrived during this closure period, whereas previously not a single vehicle would arrive during this time.”
He said this year, 320 vehicles have already arrived in just one month, and it is expected that another 400-500 vehicles will pass through this platform by April.
“The biggest challenge was the weather conditions and power supply. For this purpose, NLC not only installed a solar system but also set up three large generators. Internet facilities were upgraded to prevent any disruption in customs and other systems.”
Lieutenant Colonel Basharat Khan Jadoon said modern heating systems were installed in residential offices because the temperature here drops to -25 to -30 degrees Celsius.
“This is our second year, and we are now confidently able to continue operations without any hindrance. So far, there has been snowfall three times, but despite this, the loading and unloading process continued uninterrupted.”
Sost Dry Port a game-changer
He said the dry port has proven to be a game-changer for the region. “Currently, approximately 95% of the staff working here are local residents. NLC is not only playing a role in infrastructure development but is also providing full support in the fields of education, health, and sports.”
He said NLC has constructed a block at the Sost High School, which has facilitated the holding of various events and examinations, while classrooms have also been provided in improved condition.
Additionally, NLC sponsors local sports competitions, including marathon races, the Tour de Khunjerab event, and Shandur Polo.
Local individuals and youth are also encouraged in hiking and other activities. “NLC not only supports them but also motivates them to excel in education and sports so that they can bring honor to their region and country.”
